On Friday the Chief of Staff of the Russian Navy Viktor Kravchenko announced that NATO intelligence is attempting to gather information about the operation to raise the Kursk nuclear submarine. The evidence he said is that a Norwegian research ship called Maryata, permanently positioned near the operation zone has been joined by another Norwegian Navy ship with hydroaccustic research equipment, called Sverdlup.

It appears that surveillance from the air is also being conducted. Kravchenko also said Friday that on Wednesday, the chief of the operation to raise the Kursk Admiral Motsak and the crew of a helicopter in which he was flying to the operation area had seen a Norwegian Air Force plane unacceptably close.

''I had to make a warning to the Norwegian side in connection with this incident,'' Admiral Kravchenko said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has sent an official note of protest to Norway.
