In this case, the nuclear options the US has are far in excess of those imagined. Afghanistan is in the proverbial middle of nowhere.

Russia didn't mind when a tactical nuclear device was deployed over Yugoslavia. (perhaps they did...but it didn't matter much)

Besides, I wasn't thinking of Pakistan.

Failure is not an option... unless we want this sort of thing to happen every tuesday for the next few years or until we turn the US into a police-state more intense than Nazi Germany.
