They didn't have to be experts
As one interviewee on (I think) "Larry King Live" remarked, it doesn't take much skill to fly a plane after it's already in the air. Taking off and landing are the hard parts. Steering into a building only takes no heart, no conscience and no sanity.
The idea that these would have to have been trained professional pilots doesn't take this into account.
