Re: As I Recall . . .

George Takei (no Mobious intended) was camped during WW II.

I think I would worry more about Middle East communities in the USA that had nothing to do with this, and the local good ol' boys. I believe we've come past that in our history, but I'd really hate to see some of the things witnessed in the 50s, 60's, & 70s repeated.

There was a film I saw in the 60s whose title I cannot remember (gasp!). It involved a young boy whose parents died in an auto accident in the early 30s. He was adopted and raised by a couple who had moved a few years before to New York from Japan. When he was 18 years old, it was winter, 1941. After the strike at Pearl Harbor, he and his brothers went to the recruiter to enlist. They accepted him, but his brothers were of Japanese descent, so were taken to a camp for months of investigation. They were eventually released, and I remember one of them making officer grade in the Air Corps. there was a scene on a Pacific island where the main character, the orphan at the beginning of the flick, was with a unit pinned by bunker fire. He managed to work his way to the back of the bunker, then shouted at them to open the door -- in Japanese. They did. He tossed in a grenade. His commander asked him where he had learned that trick, and he just smiled. “From my mother,” he replied.

An interesting flick,
Dan
