Alex Zanardi
So I change the subject and it's another tragedy.
For those of you who follow auto racing, you already know who Alex Zanardi is. For those who don't, he's a witty, charming 34-year-old Italian racer who took American open-wheel racing by storm in 1996 and returned to it this year.
Today in Klettwitz, Germany he lost both his legs in a horrendous accident that sliced his car in half 12 laps from the end of the newly-renamed American Memorial 500 at the Eurospeedway.
He's alive, and stable. I keep telling myself, the week could get worse.
