CNN Asked to Leave Afghanistan
Thursday, 20 September 2001

ISLAMABAD -- Reuters
AFGHANISTAN'S ruling Taliban has asked CNN to leave the country, the US television news channel said on Wednesday.

Nic Robertson, reporting from the Taliban headquarters of Kandahar, is one of the last remaining western journalists in Afghanistan which is braced for possible strikes from the United States after last week’s attacks on New York and Washington.

“We understand now that the ruling has come from the supreme leader of the Taliban, Mullah Mohammad Omar, that absolutely no exception can be made at this time...our time has come,” Robertson said.

The station said it was petitioning the Taliban for permission to stay.
