I don't disagree with a single thing you said but the fact remains that the people want a short term victory of some sort. Roosevelt staged the Doolittle Tokyo raids to provide this very thing at the beginning of WWII.
That mission did not shorten the war by a single day but it was of great importance to the people. In addition to relatively unimportant damage, we gained heros.
This war must be faught in the hearts of the American people as well as the minds of generals, politicians, diplomats and philosophers.
