We do have some Moslems in uniform

although I doubt they make up much more than 1% of the personnel. We don't segregate units on religious or racial grounds so we can't very well send "Muslim units" anywhere. Those units don't exist.

If we go into Afghanistan in force, our best hope might be to help one or more of the rebel groups drive out the Taliban. However, if those groups are seen as American puppets, they'll have a hard time ruling the population. There's also the concern that the new government might not be any less oppressive than the Taliban.

I think our best hope for peace in the long term is to try and win the hearts and minds of the refugees and poor people in Afghanistan. I'd work through the Green Crescent (the Islamic equivalent of the Red Cross) and send in massive amounts of aid. If we can convince the people there that we aren't the enemy of Islam or of the average Mohammed on the street, then perhaps we can head off the next generation of terrorists. We might also help undermine the support today's terrorists get from the population. Right now, the people are suffering and they see us as the cause of their pain. We can bomb the crap out of any target worth an air strike, but if we don't work to win their hearts and minds, we're going to get sucked into a quagmire that'll make Vietnam look like a cake-walk.
