Re: A Story I Remember Vaguely

The 1993 WTC bomb was made from fertilizer and fuel oil as was McVeigh's OKC bomb. I still have one of my old Army field manuals that shows how to make incendiary devices out of almost anything including the chemicals found in a typical home. Someone with a little chemistry knowledge and tenacity can make a bomb out of all sorts of things. The VC were masters at this. What are we to do, ban fuel oil and fertilizer along with kitchen cleansers? How about banning gasoline, propane, and all of the other things that can be made to go boom? While we're at it, we'd need to ban the teaching of chemistry and the entire petroleum industry. If you want a preview of what kind of life we'd all be living, go to Afghanistan. We can't bomb them back to the Stone Age because they're already there. Most of us don't want to join them.

It appears this is a war that will be fought in the shadows. Odds are, our Special Forces (Army Green Berets and Rangers, Navy SEALS, Marine RECON, and Air Force Special Ops) will be quietly inserted into hostile areas on search & destroy, recon, and snatch missions. In the meantime, our intelligence organizations will be trying to coordinate with their counterparts in other countries in an attempt to gather vital info. In other places, people will be working to track down the sources of terrorist funding and cut it off. We may even get to the point where nations that harbor or sponsor terrorism will made international pariahs - no diplomatic relations, no trade (even oil), no contact of any kind. This will likely be a war unlike any other, and winning it will be very difficult. For that matter, how will we ever know if we've won? All the terrorists groups would have to do is go to ground for a couple years to make us think they've disappeared, only to strike again at a time of their choosing.
