Powell Claims Sufficient Evidence Against bin Laden
Saturday, September 22, 2001 (11:05 AM AEST)

United States Secretary of State Colin Powell says his country already has enough evidence to bring Osama bin Laden to trial in the United States.

Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia are still insisting on further proof of bin Laden's involvement in last week's terrorist attacks before handing bin Laden over to the United States.

However, Mr Powell says bin Laden is still wanted for previous attacks on the US, such as the bombing of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 and the bombing of USS Cole in Yemen.

"He has been indicted for previous offences against the United States, previous offences against humanity, and I think we have enough intelligence information as well as legally sufficient evidence to bring it before an American court," Mr Powell said.
