For more details on what Matt is referring to:
The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan
I'm still waiting to hear from American feminists in the public media on this subject.
On the NOW web site, a search for "RAWA" reveals just one single reference: a response from a woman in Iowa to a survey question on heroes...er, I mean "sheroes" in public life.
I quote from the site:
5) What current woman in public life is a true shero (sic)? Why?
The most popular answers:
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Madeleine Albright
Barbara Boxer
Oprah Winfrey
Tammy Baldwin
Others: Chelsea Clinton, Jerrie Cobb, Elizabeth Dole, Marion Wright Edelman, Anita Hill, Patricia Ireland, Winona LaDuke, Eleanor Smeal and Alice Walker.
"All of the women of RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, are my sheroes. They are fighting for the greatest thing in the world—freedom."
—Jennifer DeFosse, Muscatine, Iowa
Fortunately, a search under the more general "Afghanistan" reveals many more references, showing that NOW has, in fact, addressed this issue a number of times since the Taliban took over. Good for them! I hope to hear more feminists address this subject on news programs and the other media in the future.
Go to the RAWA site. You will learn what women fighting for their rights looks like.
