The Taliban have been on a reign of terror pretty much since their inception, with their "interpretation" of Sharia.
The statues were a crime against humanity's culture and history. Their treatment of Afghans, women, non-Muslims and dissident Muslims is a crime against humanity itself.

Not that you'd notice from the US media - one of the the few things that got through to my shocked brain 2 weeks ago was a CNN report on the explosion outside Kabul.
The reporter said something along the lines of "Our viewers may not know this but Afghanistan has been fighting a civil war for the last decade".
If the media would perhaps report occasionally of news outside of these shores then perhaps the viewers would have known.........
