Taliban 'Set to Unleash Cheap Heroin’
By Keith Dovkants / Associated Newspapers, Ltd.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan
The Taliban is set to unleash cheap heroin against the West. Reports reaching Pakistan indicate that the price of raw opium in Afghanistan has halved to around £160 a kilo after a sudden and unexplained surge in availability.

Dealers who ply a regular trade between Pakistan and the Kandahar plateau where heroin poppies are grown are flocking to snap up these new supplies.

The raw opium is smuggled across Afghanistan's highly porous borders to processing plants used as wholesale outlets for criminal gangs which supply dealers in the US, Europe and elsewhere. Processing turns it into heroin which dealers buy in Turkey for around £13,000 a kilo. But this price will fall sharply if the new sale prices in Afghanistan are maintained.
