Burt Wolf: I am here with a member of the army rangers team that invaded the Bin Laden hideout... And THE member of the team that personally took out Bin Laden... Thomas can you describe that event for us?
Thomas: The whole invasion? Burt I cannot do that...
Burt: No we understand a lot of that is classified and rightly so, but can you tell us of the moments surrounding your encounter with Bin Laden when you finally made your way through the tunnels of his mountain hideout?
Thomas: well, yes I can do that... we knew he was in those tunnels and we had posted troops to ensure he couldnt get out... I was point man for one of the teams that was sent in to clear the tunnels out and find him...
Burt: There were more than one teams?
Thomas: yes, but I cannot say how many were involved... anyway we came to a heavily guarded corridor... You have to understand, Burt, that each time we came to a corner we scoped it out with fiber optics before we entered it... Anyway there were 9 heavily armed guards guarding one room...at that point we felt we may have hit the mother lode! We lobbed a few concussion grenades and several fragmentation grenades around the corner... In that confined space they REALLY were loud and really rattled us, but they did the job....
Burt: so all 9 were dead?
Thomas: All 9 were incompacitated...we took their weapons... at this point we had to don our gas masks since the smoke was so thick... Anyway as point man I entered the room first...and saw an obviously stunned man stumbling to get to an AK-47...I recognized him immediately as Bin Laden... I had to stop him before he got the rifle and became a threat... so I raised my automatic and fired, but Burt I guess my aim was rattled by the effects of the blasts... instead of the quick "3-tap" to the head we are trained to do under such circumstances I missed completely...
Burt: You missed?
Thomas: yes, I ended up hitting his kneecaps and grazing his crotch.... Before I could fire again I realized I was out of ammo.... so we spent several minutes finding more while "treating" him...
after a while I was reloaded... despite his obvious and loud agony he looked like he was trying to go for another weapon under his robe so we had to fire again...this time our aim was true.... I am amazed that as a professional marksman that my first shots were so far off... (wolfish grin)
Burt: Thank you for your account...
A nice way to start... A hoped fo interview
