US alternately fans the flames & puts out the fire

Depending upon which administration is in charge and whose foreign policy agenda is being implemented. You might have a Camp David summit and the peace process might move a step forward. But then America will just as readily lose everything gained by supporting harsh reprisals launched by Israel against the Palestinians.

That America is Israel's chief ally is not news. Yet people still have trouble understanding that this means America can only do so much to help the Palestinians before it switches back to Isreal's side.

So long as the world's most powerful nation remains Israel's staunchest ally, the Palestinians will continue to get the short end of the stick. Israel will continue to abuse the people who once inhabited the land Israel now occupies. The Palestinians, and other Arabs, will continue to feel righteous indignation and justification to commit terrible acts of their own in response to Israel's own crimes. And the cycle of violence will never stop.

Frank is right that this won't be ending any time soon.

So long as the fuel for conflict is in endless supply, conflict will continue. Ultimately, the best way to attack terrorism is to attack its root causes. That may require waging something besides war.

Such as peace.
