Afghanistan's Taleban regime has denied claims that it has captured three members of America's elite special forces.

The statement by Taleban representatives in Kabul reportedly said that no special forces had entered its territory.

A spokesman for the Pentagon in Washington also refuted a report, broadcast on the al-Jazeera satellite station in the Gulf, that the Americans had been captured along with two Afghans inside Afghanistan.

A Pentagon spokesman said: "We are not going to comment on each and every report that comes out of the region. There isn't a story here."

According to al-Jazeera, which has close links with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, the captured men were armed and were carrying maps showing al-Qaida bases.
