Tom Hanks was great in the role but butchered the dialect badly. For a much better example watch "Slingblade". It was dead on and just as funny.
Phonetically it should have been more like this, "I gut shut in thu buttucks, they teh me it's a miyon doller woon"
BTW the author Winston Groom's mother was my HS english teacher.
