Taliban fighters today recaptured a key area of western Afghanistan lost at the weekend, according to the Afghan Islamic Press.
Taliban fighters launched a pre-dawn attack and took back Qadis district in Badghis province after three hours of fighting, the AIP said. They also boosted their ranks with the defection of around 60 Northern Alliance fighters.
The ebb and flow of territory is typical of warfare in Afghanistan.
Mass defections are also common as warlords frequently switch allegiance depending on who is winning -- usually taking all their men with them.
Two Taliban fighters and three opposition soldiers were killed, the report said.
