Critics say ID cards are a blow to personal freedom.
'Unreliable and damaging'
Proposals to introduce compulsory identity cards following the terrorist attacks in the US have come under fire from a former Home Office minister and the New York branch of the Labour Party.
As Labour's annual conference was under way in Brighton, Mike O'Brien -- Home Office minister during Prime Minister Tony Blair's first term -- said ID cards did not work and that "terrorists would claim [their introduction] as a victory".
His comments were echoed by a motion sent to the conference by the overseas New York branch of the Labour Party, which warned that ID cards would only "further the terrorist agenda".
Prime Minister Tony Blair and Home Secretary David Blunkett have confirmed they are looking at plans for mandatory ID cards, with legislation possibly to be unveiled in the next few weeks.

"Oh, no! Not an ID card! Oh, anything, but that! I don't want people to know who I am! Oh, what to do?! What to do?!"
I'm surprised we've ever been able to get ANYTHING done in this world!
