Press reporting conundrum

Last paragraph seems to imply that AP, etc. suppresses certain coverage so as to maintain continued press access and safety. While its notable to safeguard your newspersons, have we entered a new era, unlike WWII and Vietnam where we DO NOT have certain things reported because it offends the terrorist (excuse me for thiis "perjorative") sympathizing community? IF this is so, what use is the press?
