I am going to respond to this from two places, one from a military viewpoint, the other as a human being that knows what a battlefield truly is. Then I am going to shut my mouth, we can debate and argue this forever, and I honestly believe that none of us will change our position.

We have little choice in the matter of attacking the military facilities in Afghanistan. If we do not do so now the members of the El Queida will eventually scatter to the four winds. Wherever they come to a stop they will foment such acts as to make Sep 11 resemble a practice run. I have learned that they have been seriously attempting to acquire Nuclear and Bio/Chem assets for a couple of years now. The probabilities of their success are a lot higher than is comfortable. I must repeat, this enemy has no interest in negotiating, this enemy has but one goal. To convert every single human being on the face of this planet to their singular form of religion, or kill them. Period

The current Cruise Missile and Air Strikes are directed at the Military Infrastructure only, there have been Covert teams in country since Sep. 13. Targets have been assessed and identified, GPS coordinates have been triple checked. Cruise Missile target error is less than 5 meters with GPS. The new ‘smart bombs’ which are guided by GPS have an error rate of less than 0.5 percent. Will innocent people die, sadly yes. But it is not a strike with carpet bombing or indiscriminate iron bombs. It is designed to be as precise as possible with our current capability.
This is not only from desire to do as little damage outside the military as possible. It is also to show all those who took the risk of their own populations of Fundamentalists rising up against them that we are serious about not harming the general population of Afghanistan.

Right now in the dry barren terrain of Afghanistan there are human beings suffering, from the effects of three years of drought, 20 years of war and the iron fisted rule of those who hold the firm conviction that they, and only they, know the will of God.
Widows buried alive, accused adulterers stoned to death in public executions. Orphan children turned out into the streets to starve because they have no male relatives to stand up for them.
Also now, those innocents who by mere circumstance were in an area where the bombs fell, or cruise missiles struck are weeping or screaming for their own who are a bloody mess on the ground or under a pile of rubble. Just like those who stood and watched those towers fall, and the Pentagon burn.
I get twisted inside when I hear of war, I know the true look of it. It is not a Rambo movie, it is bloody, stinking, gut ripping horror. Think of the worst road kill you ever saw, then multiply it ten times, or a hundred, or a thousand, that is the true face of battle. And realize this, those ragged scraps of once living flesh all around you. Those were human beings.

Yet I also know that without resistance to those who would force us to their will, we would not survive. We would be overrun by those who would strip us of the very freedoms we so love and enjoy. So we actually have little choice, fight, or kneel before a conqueror who would joyfully take all we have, and are.
Whether that conqueror uses soldiers in uniform, with a clear identity, or slips through the cracks and attacks by stealth and deception makes no difference. The end result would be the same.
