Stocks of companies involved in biodefense jumped as Americans worried about the threat of biological warfare.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Wednesday posted its second-biggest jump since the terrorist attacks as investors gained confidence that military action in Afghanistan won't sink the stock market.

The blue-chip average climbed 188.42, or 2.1%, to end at 9240.86 after losing 15.50 in the previous session. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 56.07, or 3.6%, to close at 1626.26 after declining 35.76 on Tuesday.

It was the tenth-largest point gain this year for the Dow industrials, and the ninth-largest percentage gain. The average is still more than 350 points from where it was on Sept. 10, the day before the terrorists attacks that had shut down trading for four days and rattled markets when they reopened.
