South Asia-bound Ships May Need War-Risk Insurance
Thursday, October 11, 2001
The US ambassador to the United Nations, John Negroponte, told the Security Council on Monday that the United States, acting in self-defense after the 11 September attacks, may take "further actions with respect to other organisations and other states."

The war risk insurance premium may soon be tagged on to ships heading toward a few hot spots in South Asia in the wake of the US' promise to root out terrorists in those regions.
Many ship owners and operators in the US and Europe have already imposed a war risk premium on ships going to the Middle East due to the ongoing bombardment of terrorist bases in Afghanistan.
US officials were quoted by New York Times Wednesday as saying terrorists tied to Osama bin Laden's network and based in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are among the likely targets of future covert and overt American actions.
The officials gave no timetable, but said that the campaign against the groups linked to bin Laden and his group, Al Qaeda, is global and may last for years.
Shipping sources in the US are monitoring the situation closely, and will only act if a war breaks out in Asia.

It is possible John Negroponte is referring to troubles in the land of his previous occupation, that being an American ambassador to the Philippines (or not),
