What happens is this. These internet scamsters look for domain name registrations (like Habitablezone.com) that have lapsed on their renewals. They then legally buy the name, put a link to a porn site, such as something with Tom Broz and some farm animals, stuff that would only appeal to Belgians, and then they offer to sell back the name rights for $1,000 or so. Embarrasingly, this happened to a Mass police department last August. I'd thought that the net orgs were moving to address this loophole. I love the wild & wooly aspect of the net but this kids sites to porn links stuff ticks me off.
