The State Department withheld details of Powell's arrival time and activities, recognizing the fierce opposition of many Pakistanis to their government's cooperation in efforts to hunt down Bin Laden and his associates.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- News Wire Services
Secretary of State Powell arrived in Pakistan yesterday under intense security to consult with the region's leaders about replacing the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan.
Powell arrived on the same day that representatives of Afghanistan's 86-year-old former king landed in the country to take part in similar talks, although they were not expected to meet with Powell.
"What we're doing really is contingency planning and getting ready for the possibility that some time in the near future there could be a need to respond to the collapse of the government, if one can call that evil regime a government," Powell said.
