A fairly common fate for political prisoners at that time. In England their head was usually spiked on London Bridge and left until the crows had picked it clean.
Makes the Islamic punishments like stoning and limb dismemberment seem mild by comparison.
It is also encouraging that western culture, in 500 years has reached a point that this kind of treatment has gone from an acceptable public spectacle to the unthinkable.
