The Taliban stronghold of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan was under heavy attack early today, with regular loud explosions being heard, CNN has reported.

Youssef Al-Shouli, a correspondent with Qatar's al-Jazeera satellite television, said that the city was tense.

He said after he arrived in Kandahar at 9:00pm yesterday (2:30am AEST, today), rockets or bombs could be seen exploding in the south of the city near the airport.

US-led attacks on Afghanistan, in a bid to flush out fugitive militant Osama bin Laden, are now continuing through an 11th day.
