I don't know exactly how much pump gas would cost if crude were $144 a barrel, but you can be sure that people would be a lot more careful in their fuel use - driving less, buying fewer SUVs, wearing more sweaters, etc., meaning much less fuel would be sold. And how much of that $144 would the big oil companies get?
You can also be sure that it would light a big fire under the development/expansion of other energy sources, like nuclear.
Hmmmm.... maybe not such a bad idea!
