ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 27 — In a blow to U.S. efforts to shape a new government for Afghanistan, the ruling Taliban regime said Abdul Haq, a top opposition leader, was executed for treason on Friday. After first dismissing the report carried by the Taliban’s Bahktar news agency, his family said late Friday that Abdul Haq and a companion had been hanged by the hardline Islamic militia.
