"Forensic tests are going on right now," Prosecutor General of Russia Vladimir Ustinov was quoted as saying, but said it might take more than a month to determine all the identities.
Six bodies have been recovered from the nuclear submarine Kursk, raised to the surface fourteen months after the tragedy that claimed the lives of all 118 crewmembers and shocked the whole world.
A team of investigators from the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office entered the Kursk on Thursday. They found and removed three bodies from the rear section (9th compartment) of the sub, after the water was pumped out from inside. More bodies were recovered on Friday morning.
At a news conference in Murmansk on Thursday, Prosecutor General of Russia Vladimir Ustinov said the bodies had not undergone any significant transformation. “We thought everything would be worse,” and added that the recovered bodies would be easy to identify by appearance.
Spokesman for the Russian Northern Fleet Vladimir Navrotsky confirmed to Gazeta.Ru on Thursday that investigators had found three bodies on the upper deck of the ninth compartment. After a thorough examination, the bodies were packed in special bags and taken to the military hospital in Severomorsk for further forensic examination.
