Pentagon denies claim; reports have Americans travelling with captured rebel
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- AP
The Taliban ambassador to Pakistan claimed today that the Islamic militia had arrested Americans in Afghanistan - but gave no details or evidence. The United States denied it.
"There have been arrests, but I don't know how many were taken, or where," Taliban envoy Abdul Salam Zaeef told reporters in answer to questions about Pakistani media reports that one or more Americans had been arrested in Afghanistan.
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said "There have been no Americans captured," when he was asked about the Taliban report at the Pentagon today.
