Well. Now what? I guess one's political outlook would decide which of these people is lying to serve a political agenda--Seymour Hersh, who is part of themassive leftist media attempt to wreck our military effort and bring the United States to defeat, or Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers, who obviously wants the military effort to be shown in the best possible light and wouldn't want screwups to pop into the open.

Looking at the records of the two, and Hersh's previous writings, is there a pattern of behavior that would tend to lead to one conclusion or the other?

Of course, the soldiers themselves know the truth and will tell it someday. This may end up going down with the famous fictional Southeast Asia "nerve gas attack" as a black eye for the media.
