JABAL-US-SARAJ, Afghanistan -- Reuters
On the same day U.S. warplanes bombed Taliban positions near Kabul, an aircraft dropped propaganda leaflets on opposition Afghan territory on Wednesday just a few miles away.

Small, card-sized pieces of paper glistened against the sun as they fluttered onto the dusty, crammed streets of Jabal-us-Saraj, some 40 miles north of the capital.

One of the leaflets showed a Taliban man beating a woman wearing the traditional Afghan head-to-toe burqa veil.

"Do you want your women and your children to live this way?" were the words next to the image, written both in Dari spoken by ethnic Tajiks living mainly in the north of the country and in Pashto spoken by the majority Pashtun group. The other side of the paper showed pictures of Taliban fighters being trained by the al Qaeda network that is controlled by Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden, accused as the mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

A second leaflet gave the radio frequencies of news programs running for 10 hours each day providing information about what was going on in Afghanistan.
