People's Republic of San Francisco

Ballot measures that would decide if the City By The Bay will "nationalize" the electrical power utilities in the city have been held up while absentee ballots are closely inspected for possible contamination.

It would indeed be interesting to see power generation in the hands of a city government that has demonstrated many times that they could not find their butts with both hands and a working Global Positioning Unit, but we'll see what happens. It has been pointed out that the public power facilities of Sacramento and Los Angeles provided power to customers at lower rates during the energy crisis, but I suspect having a tap into the taxpayers' pockets might have helped there.

On the other hand, PG and E is certainly no shining example of a compentent, independent private company free of government entanglements, so maybe the City Fathers could not do much worse.
