"The Taliban offered safety, but the kind of safety you have in a prison," Roya Nassery said. "People were willing to take it."
Roya Nassery was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1978.
It was the same year Russia invaded in hopes of annexing the country and setting up a puppet government.
Two years later when the mujahedin began to fight back, people sought to escape the chaos through mountain passages to Pakistan.
"Between 1978 and 1985 life in Afghanistan changed dramatically," Nassery told a crowd of more than 150 gathered last night at the Brewster Ladies' Library for the "Beyond Our Borders" program. "It was very difficult for men, women and children."
An 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew was initiated and only the lucky ones with knowledge of certain passwords were allowed on the streets.
A year after Nassery's birth, her sister entered a very different world. It began with a home birth because the younger sister came into the world past curfew. Luckily, Nassery's father was a physician so the birth went as smoothly as possible.
