The target is bigger than that.

They want to destroy our way of life, because the success of our infidel society is undermining their repressive version of Islam.

How does one destroy a free society?

What was it that Franklin Roosevelt said? "We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

Suspicion. Forced conformity. Checkpoints and identity cards. Curtailment of civil rights. Undermining of the economic system through attack on its centers and methods of communication. Restrictions, both voluntary and official, on freedom of movement.

If we can turn into a version of them, they win.
