PARIS
The French are flocking to films about Afghanistan as they struggle to understand a remote country propelled onto the world stage by US air strikes.

French interest in Afghanistan before the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States was limited to the occasional fund-raising campaign or the odd documentary about the suffering and oppression of its women - hardly blockbuster material.

But since the central Asian country found itself facing the wrath of the United States for harbouring prime suspect Osama bin Laden, films about Afghanistan have been pulling in the crowds.

"Kandahar," a fictional film about the plight of Afghan women under the ruling Taliban, is the latest must-see in Paris.
