ObL is NOT part of the Saudi royal family.
While the CIA could easily be rewriting history, the sotries all seem to point to the idea that ObL was always anti-West, and was pursuing a seperate but convergent policy in setting up shop in Pakistan's side of the Afghan frontier.
The consesnus (again subject to possible CIA cover up of antoher screwup) is that ObL was never intimately involved with CIA efforts, but was a free agent representing conservative sunni interests, not ours.
But he has clearly devolved into something far far different from what anyone, including most of his original backers, would want to be associated with.
