I think it'd be a good idea to bring in a peacekeeping force during the transitional period while Afghanistan establishes their own government. Someone suggested these forces should be Turks. I agree with that idea. If it isn't possible to get enough Turks to do the job by themselves, then I suggest that the peacekeeping force have a Turkish commander. First of all, the Turks are Moslems. That counts for a lot. Second, they're one of the very few Moslem countries that is a democracy (or close to one). They're also staunch NATO allies and can be counted on in hard times.
The most important thing is that we do everything we can to help Afghanistan establish their own government and infrastructure. This is a chance for us to do it right for a change. It might require a rebuilding effort like the Marshall Plan. If we do it properly, we could help turn that war-torn nation from a despotic regime that supported terrorists into a peaceful country that's a friend.
