Aviation giant United Airlines has announced plans to arm its pilots with stun guns to prevent September 11-style cockpit invasions.
United said yesterday it would put non-lethal Taser weapons in the cockpit of each of its 500 planes. The Taser fires an electrical charge that incapacitates an attacker.
The US's second-biggest airline announced the move as Congress finally reached agreement on a national plan for aviation security.
Under the compromise bill, which was expected to be passed overnight, federal employees would immediately begin taking over the screening of passengers and baggage.
