Northern Alliance Agrees to Talks
Tuesday, November 20, 2001

"We are very aware that convening these groups would not mean that every single Afghan would feel totally happy, totally represented," UN envoy Francesc Vendrell said.

Leaders of Afghanistan's Northern alliance have accepted a United Nations invitation to attend talks on creating a power-sharing administration to govern the war torn country.

The talks will take place in German capital Berlin at the weekend.

Afghanistan has been without a central government since the Taleban fled from the capital Kabul on November 13 and there are concerns that the resulting power vacuum could lead to a slide into lawlessness.

The UN wants to bring together the leaders of the various tribes and factions in Afghanistan to form a "broad-based" interim government.

The Northern Alliance's formal acceptance of the UN invitation was announced by its acting foreign minister Dr Abdullah Abdullah.
