I certainly don't expect Islamic terrorism to die in Afghanistan. I expect that we will leave under better circumstances than the situations you mentioned but we will still have a long fight ahead of us.
We may never kill the beast but we will be required to keep it under control to the extent that they are left with small scale expressions of their anger. To do less is not just a threat to us, it is a greater threat to the whole of Islam.
