Amnesty International has called for an urgent inquiry into the killing of hundreds of Taliban prisoners during a revolt at a prison fortress in Afghanistan.

There's no independent information on what triggered the uprising but the Northern Alliance has blamed captured Taliban fighters of trying to take over the fortress near Mazar-e-Sharif.

The revolt was quashed after three days with the help of American air strikes.

Claudio Cordone of Amnesty says the scale of the killings deserves further investigation.

The key principles that it's important to underline in the situation where there's been a lot of talking about killing as opposed to capture and bringing to trial and the like, is that prisoners must be respected under all circumstances and that applies to what happened in the fortress, but it also applies to what's been happening apparently in Kunduz where there's been more reports of Taliban soldiers, or others, having being killed after having been captured.
