Confusion reigned tonight at how far the Northern Alliance forces had pushed towards the Taliban's last stronghold of Kandahar.

The Northern Alliance deputy defence minister, Bismillah Khan, said anti-Taliban forces were pushing into Kandahar -- but his claim could not be independently verified.

Mr Kahn told the Associated Press, "We entered into Kandahar," and reported that there was fighting on the eastern outskirts of the city.

He was reportedly speaking from Kabul and said his information was based on radio communications with his commanders at the scene. "There is heavy fighting going on," he said, adding that he did not expect the city to fall quickly.
