Even they did put a back door in PGP there are hundreds of variations around that are probably just as good. Blowfish for example I think is open source. All you need to do is put the data through different parts of an encrypting program a different number of times than the standard program and the backdoor probably wuldn't work.
If you hang out at sci.crypt there are postings nearly every day of new variations.
