NEW YORK (CNN) -- After nearly a year of speculation and media hype, inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen will unveil "Ginger" on ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday, an invention that some say could change the world and others believe is a motor scooter.
Kamen said all the speculation is overblown. Word about Ginger leaked in January causing a media frenzy. Fueling the hype, one of Kamen's companies, DEKA Research, secured the Web site -- mysterlingscooter.com -- in February, leading some to believe Ginger is a six-wheeled scooter powered by a fuel efficient Stirling engine.
Stirling engines are powered by the expansion and compression of contained fuel. They are energy efficient but take time to warm up. That's one reason why they were never used in automobiles.
"Even if Kamen simply came up with a Stirling engine that was capable of powering a scooter, it would be a culture-changer," Kovace Janos, a professor of mechanics at Magyar Tudomanyos Akademis in Budapest, stated in Wired magazine.
Apple Computer's Steve Jobs said the invention could change the world, but others laughingly said it rivals the invention of pantyhose.
Kamen has offices in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he works on various inventions, including the Stirling engine. Kamen invented a portable infusion pump at the age of 16 when his brother, then a medical student, told Dean that patients needed an efficient way take certain medicines throughout the day.
In later years, Kamen invented a portable dialysis machine and recently IBOT, a wheelchair that climbs stairs. IBOT's code name was "Fred." Some think "Ginger" might have similar features since the names are loosely linked to the famous dance duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Kamen chose "Good Morning America" for the "unveiling" because Disney, which owns ABC, hosts the finals of Kamen's FIRST Robotics Competition. Kamen is devoted to this project, saying getting kids excited about science and math far surpasses any of his inventions.
