"And who's this little fellow...

<in his itty-bitty robe?" An adorable baby, isn't he?

They all are. But human is as human does. While it's true that we all bleed red, what is less clear is how one measures intentions.

Had Jane's intentions been to show the world that the North Vietnamese were human beings, too, she could have spent all her time visiting schools and hospitals. She didn't. She was a state guest, feted by high-ranking officials. Is torture all right as long as one agrees with the torturers' politics?

It also mattered very much who she was. She was a star, the daughter of a beloved actor and an artist of some talent herself. From what I understand, her family had issues. Distant Daddy was one of the icons of America. She wanted to be the anti-icon. That would have been fine had she confined herself to making speeches on American television. But no -- she visited people who were torturing her countrymen and gave them her dazzling Hollywood smile. She made real soldiers accessories and victims in her search for a not-Henry identity.
