World must support new leader

Afghanistan has been given another chance. So has the world.

The once seemingly powerful Taliban militia regime has been eliminated. Its warped interpretation of Islam - where women are reduced to objects who not only are supposed to be not seen and not heard but not educated; where men are made to wear their beards a certain length or else; and where most forms of entertainment are banned - is no more.

On Saturday, a new day dawned in this war-ravaged country. Hamid Karzai, 43, who speaks fluent English as well as Afghanistan's two major languages, was sworn in as the interim prime minister.

Karzai's term will last six months. Then a grand assembly will appoint a transitional regime to rule for 18 more months. It is hoped at that time a free election will be held and a new constitution will be approved.
