Detained Scot's Mother Desperate for News

"He does not have extreme views . . . (He) has a wife and five children younger than six. He would not go off to fight and do something stupid while leaving them on their own."

The distraught mother of a Scot suspected of fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan contacted the Foreign Office yesterday, desperate for news about her son.

However, officials were unable to give much information to Margaret McLintock about her son, James, who was detained on the Pakistani border two weeks ago and has since been held in prison under interrogation.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "His mother spoke to us today to see if we'd been in contact with her son yet and to see if it was definitely him being held in Pakistan. We said we're still trying to get information."

The Herald understands that British officials in Islamabad have had Mr McLintock's detention confirmed and are awaiting authority to provide consular access. They hope this will be received by tonight.
