I heard that Dianne Feinstein was distancing herself from the "tax cuts = recession" statements. This does not look good in the Democratic Party, which is famous for lining up single-file behind the official agenda. Still looking for confirmation of this story.

And what's really funny is this bit on the Democratic National Committee site, which explains that the Democrats are most definitely NOT for increasing taxes, and Bush is silly and irresponsible for saying so.

Of course, this leaves the Democrats and Daschle in the logically indefensible position of claiming that tax cuts are bad for the economy and the main reason for our current recession, but that the Democrats are absolutely not for rescinding the tax cuts or increasing taxes in any other way. Daschle's one hope is that since logic has never been the strong suit of his core constituency, that he can get away with this colossal inconsistency.

And they have to do this in the face of Bush pounding away on his tour with the common-sense assertion that if anyone is against tax cuts, then they must be for tax increases.

We'll see what happens.
